18. Did the 3 Kings arrive while the shepherds were still at the manger, or did they arrive at the manger later?
There are several problems with this question.
First, the Bible does not identify this group as Kings, but Maggi.
Second, they presented three types of gifts, but the scripture never says there were 3 Magi; there were probably many more.
Third, they did not arrive the night Jesus was born but somewhere between 1 month to 2 years later.
Matthew 2:1-2
Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king,
magi from the east arrived in Jerusalem, saying,
2 "Where is He who has been born King of the Jews?
For we saw His star in the east and have come to worship Him." NASU
Matthew 2:7-11
7 Then Herod secretly called the magi and determined from them the exact time the star appeared.
8 And he sent them to Bethlehem and said,
"Go and search carefully for the Child; and when you have found Him, report to me, so that I too may come and worship Him."
9 After hearing the king, they went their way;
and the star, which they had seen in the east, went on before them until it came and stood over the place where the Child was.
10 When they saw the star, they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy.
11 After coming into the house they saw the Child with Mary His mother; and they fell to the ground and worshiped Him.
Then, opening their treasures, they presented to Him
gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.
NASU
Matthew 2:16
Then when Herod saw that he had been tricked by the magi, he became very enraged,
and sent and slew all the male children who were in Bethlehem and all its vicinity,
from two years old and under,
according to the time
which he had determined from the magi.
NASU
19. How did these pagan Magi, from Persia, know about the coming birth of the King of the Jews,
and how did they know the sign for which to look?
We cannot say with certainty, but the Biblical evidence seems to point to Daniel.
Daniel 4:4-9
4 I, Nebuchadnezzar, was at rest in my house, and flourishing in my palace.
5 I saw a dream which made me afraid, and the thoughts on my bed and the visions of my head troubled me.
6 Therefore I issued a decree to bring in all the wise men of Babylon before me, that they might make known to me the interpretation of the dream.
7 Then the magicians, the astrologers, the Chaldeans, and the soothsayers came in, and I told them the dream;
but they did not make known to me its interpretation.
8 But at last Daniel came before me(his name is Belteshazzar, according to the name of my god; in him is the Spirit of the Holy God), and I told the dream before him, saying:
9 "Belteshazzar, chief of the magicians, because I know that the Spirit of the Holy God is in you, and no secret troubles you,
explain to me the visions of my dream that I have seen, and its interpretation.
NKJV
Daniel 5:10-12
10 The queen, because of the words of the king and his lords,
came to the banquet hall. The queen spoke, saying,
"O king, live forever! Do not let your thoughts trouble you,
nor let your countenance change.
11 There is a man in your kingdom in whom is the Spirit of the Holy God. And in the days of your father, light and understanding and wisdom,
like the wisdom of the gods, were found in him;
and King Nebuchadnezzar your father — your father the king — made him chief of the magicians, astrologers, Chaldeans, and soothsayers. 12 Inasmuch as an excellent spirit, knowledge, understanding, interpreting dreams, solving riddles, and explaining enigmas
were found in this Daniel, whom the king named Belteshazzar,
now let Daniel be called, and he will give the interpretation."
NKJV
