Revelation 2, Thyatira

The First Baptist Church of Affirmation and Tolerance

Revelation 2, Thyatira

Revelation 2:18-19

"And to the angel of the church in Thyatira write,

'These things says the Son of God,

who has eyes like a flame of fire,

and His feet like fine brass:

19 "I know your works, love, service, faith, and your patience;

and as for your works,

the last are more than the first.

When Paul traveled to Phillipi

He met a woman.

Acts 16:14-15

14 Now a certain woman named Lydia heard us.

She was a seller of purple

from the city of Thyatira,

         who worshiped God. (God fearer)

The Lord opened her heart to heed the things spoken by Paul.

15 And when she and her household were baptized,

she begged us, saying,

"If you have judged me to be faithful to the Lord,

come to my house and stay."

So she persuaded us.

NKJV

God by grace works in the lives of those

He has saved by grace

to produce the works of righteousness

and service.

Ephesians 2:8-10

8 For by grace you have been saved through faith,

and that not of yourselves;

it is the gift of God,

9 not of works, lest anyone should boast.

10 For we are His workmanship,

created in Christ Jesus

for good works,

which God prepared beforehand

that we should walk in them.

NKJV

John 15:5

5 "I am the vine, you are the branches.

He who abides in Me, and I in him,

bears much fruit;

for without Me you can do nothing.

NKJV

James 2:26

26 For as the body without the spirit is dead,

so faith without works is dead also.

NKJV

Hebrews 6:10

10 For God is not unjust to forget your work

and labor of love

which you have shown toward His name,

in that you have ministered to the saints, and do minister.

Revelation 2:20

20 Nevertheless I have a few things against you,

because you allow that woman Jezebel,

who calls herself a prophetess,

to teach

and seduce My servants to commit sexual immorality

and eat things sacrificed to idols.

NKJV

Jezebel

1 Kings 16:30-33

30 Now Ahab the son of Omri did evil

in the sight of the LORD,

more than all who were before him.

31 And it came to pass, as though it had been a trivial thing

for him to walk in the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat,

that he took as wife Jezebel the daughter of Ethbaal,

king of the Sidonians;

and he went and served Baal and worshiped him.

32 Then he set up an altar for Baal in the temple of Baal,

which he had built in Samaria.

33 And Ahab made a wooden image.

Ahab did more to provoke the LORD God of Israel to anger

 than all the kings of Israel who were before him.

NKJV

1 Kings 18:4

4 For so it was, while Jezebel massacred the prophets of the LORD,..

NKJV

1 Kings 19:1-2

And Ahab told Jezebel all that Elijah had done,

also how he had executed all the prophets with the sword.

2 Then Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah, saying,

"So let the gods do to me, and more also,

if I do not make your life as the life of one of them

by tomorrow about this time."

NKJV

1 Kings 21:25-26

25 But there was no one like Ahab who sold himself

to do wickedness in the sight of the LORD,

because

Jezebel his wife stirred him up.

26 And he behaved very abominably in following idols,

according to all that the Amorites had done,

whom the LORD had cast out

before the children of Israel.

NKJV

God expects a life of righteousness

from those

He has declared righteous

through

the sacrifice of Jesus Christ

on Calvary's cross.

Romans 6:1-7

What shall we say then?

Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound?

2 Certainly not!

How shall we who died to sin live any longer in it?

3 Or do you not know that as many of us as were baptized into Christ Jesus

were baptized into His death?

4 Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death,

that just as Christ was raised from the dead

by the glory of the Father,

even so we also should walk in newness of life.

5 For if we have been united together in the likeness of His death,

certainly we also

shall be in the likeness of His resurrection,

6 knowing this, that our old man was crucified with Him,

that the body of sin might be done away with,

that we should no longer be slaves of sin.

7 For he who has died has been freed from sin.

Romans 13:11-14

And do this, knowing the time,

that now it is high time to awake out of sleep;

 for now our salvation is nearer than when we first believed.

12 The night is far spent, the day is at hand.

Therefore let us cast off the works of darkness,

and let us put on the armor of light.

13 Let us walk properly, as in the day,

not in revelry and drunkenness,

not in lewdness and lust,

not in strife and envy.

14 But put on the Lord Jesus Christ,

and make no provision for the flesh,

to fulfill its lusts.

2 Corinthians 10:3-5

3 For though we walk in the flesh,

we do not war according to the flesh.

4 For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal

 but mighty in God

for pulling down strongholds,

5 casting down arguments

and every high thing that exalts itself

against the knowledge of God,

bringing every thought into captivity

to the obedience of Christ,

Galatians 5:16-25

 I say then: Walk in the Spirit,

and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh.

17 For the flesh lusts against the Spirit,

and the Spirit against the flesh;

and these are contrary to one another,

 so that you do not do the things that you wish.

18 But if you are led by the Spirit,

you are not under the law.

19 Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are:

adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness,

20 idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies,

outbursts of wrath,

selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies,

21 envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like;

of which I tell you beforehand,

 just as I also told you in time past,

that those who practice such things

will not inherit the kingdom of God.

Romans 8:1

There is therefore now no condemnation

to those who are in Christ Jesus,

who do not walk according to the flesh,

but according to the Spirit.

Romans 8:5-6

5 For those who live according to the flesh

set their minds on the things of the flesh,

but

those who live according to the Spirit,

the things of the Spirit.

6 For to be carnally minded is death,

but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.

Romans 8:13-14

13 For if you live according to the flesh you will die;

but if by the Spirit

you put to death the deeds of the body,

you will live.

14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God,

these are sons of God.

1 Peter 1:13-16

Therefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober,

and rest your hope fully upon the grace

that is to be brought to you

at the revelation of Jesus Christ;

14 as obedient children,

not conforming yourselves to the former lusts,

as in your ignorance;

15 but as He who called you is holy,

you also be holy in all your conduct,

16 because it is written,

"Be holy, for I am holy."

James 1:21-25

Therefore lay aside all filthiness and overflow of wickedness,

and

receive with meekness the implanted word,

which is able to save your souls.

22 But be doers of the word, and not hearers only,

deceiving yourselves.

23 For if anyone is a hearer of the word

and not a doer,

he is like a man observing his natural face in a mirror;

24 for he observes himself,

goes away,

and immediately forgets what kind of man he was.

25 But he who looks into the perfect law of liberty

and continues in it,

and

is not a forgetful hearer

but

a doer of the work,

this one will be blessed in what he does.

NKJV

Revelation 2:21-23

21 And I gave her time to repent of her sexual immorality,

and she did not repent.

22 Indeed I will cast her into a sickbed,

and those who commit adultery with her

into great tribulation,

unless they repent of their deeds

23 I will kill her children with death,

and

all the churches shall know

that I am He who searches the minds and hearts.

And I will give to each one of you

according to your works

NKJV

How did the original Jezebel die?

2 Kings 9:33-37

33 Then he said, "Throw her down."

So they threw her down,

and some of her blood spattered on the wall and on the horses;

 and he trampled her underfoot.

34 And when he had gone in, he ate and drank.

Then he said,

 "Go now, see to this accursed woman, and bury her,

for she was a king's daughter."

35 So they went to bury her,

 but they found no more of her than the skull and the feet

and the palms of her hands.

36 Therefore they came back and told him.

And he said, "This is the word of the LORD,

which He spoke by His servant Elijah the Tishbite,

saying,

'On the plot of ground at Jezreel

dogs shall eat the flesh of Jezebel;

37 and the corpse of Jezebel

shall be as refuse on the surface of the field,

in the plot at Jezreel,

so that they shall not say,

 "Here lies Jezebel."'"

God JUDGES based on our DEEDS

Romans 2:5-9

5 But in accordance with your hardness

and your impenitent heart

you are treasuring up for yourself wrath in the day of wrath

and

revelation of the righteous judgment of God,

6 who "will render to each one according to his deeds":

7 eternal life to those who by patient continuance in doing good

seek for glory, honor, and immortality;

8 but to those who are self-seeking and do not obey the truth,

but obey unrighteousness —

indignation and wrath,

9 tribulation and anguish,

on every soul of man who does evil,

2 Timothy 4:14

14 Alexander the coppersmith did me much harm;

the Lord will repay him according to his deeds.

Matthew 16:27

27 "For the Son of Man is going to come in the glory of His Father

with His angels,

NASU

Matthew 12:34-37

34 Brood of vipers! How can you, being evil, speak good things?

For out of the abundance of the heart

the mouth speaks.

35 A good man out of the good treasure of his heart

brings forth good things,

and an evil man out of the evil treasure

brings forth evil things.

36 But I say to you that

for every idle word men may speak,

 they will give account of it

in the day of judgment.

37 For by your words you will be justified,

and by your words you will be condemned."

How to Deal with False Doctrine

1 Timothy 6:3-5

If anyone teaches otherwise

and does not consent to wholesome words,

even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ,

and

to the doctrine which accords with godliness,

4 he is proud,

knowing nothing,

but is obsessed with disputes and arguments over words,

 from which come envy, strife, reviling, evil suspicions,

5 useless wranglings of men of corrupt minds

and destitute of the truth,

who suppose that godliness is a means of gain.

From such withdraw yourself.

1 Timothy 4:6-7

If you instruct the brethren in these things,

you will be a good minister of Jesus Christ,

nourished in the words of faith

and of the good doctrine

which you have carefully followed.

7 But reject profane and old wives' fables,

and

exercise yourself toward godliness.

Jesus deals with the False Teacher

Revelation 2:23

23 I will kill her children with death,

and

all the churches shall know

that I am He who searches the minds and hearts.

And I will give to each one of you

according to your works

NKJV

How should we deal with Christians who have

fallen into Sin?

RESTORATION

Galatians 6:1-2

Brethren, if a man is overtaken in any trespass,

you who are spiritual

restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness,

considering yourself

lest you also be tempted.

2 Bear one another's burdens,

and so fulfill the law of Christ.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
DISCIPLINE
Galatians 2:11-13
Now when Peter had come to Antioch,
I withstood him to his face,
because he was to be blamed;
12 for before certain men came from James,
he would eat with the Gentiles;
but when they came, he withdrew and separated himself,
fearing those who were of the circumcision.
13 And the rest of the Jews also played the hypocrite with him,
so that
 even Barnabas was carried away with their hypocrisy.
1 Corinthians 5
It is actually reported that there is sexual immorality among you,
and such sexual immorality as is not even named among the Gentiles —
that a man has his father's wife!
2 And you are puffed up, and have not rather mourned,
that he who has done this deed might be taken away
from among you.
3 For I indeed, as absent in body but present in spirit,
have already judged (as though I were present)
him who has so done this deed.
4 In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ,
when you are gathered together,
along with my spirit,
with the power of our Lord Jesus Christ,
5 deliver such a one to Satan
for the destruction of the flesh,
that his spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus.
6 Your glorying is not good.
Do you not know that a little leaven leavens the whole lump?
7 Therefore purge out the old leaven, that you may be a new lump,
since you truly are unleavened.
For indeed Christ, our Passover,
was sacrificed for us.
8 Therefore let us keep the feast, not with old leaven,
nor with the leaven of malice and wickedness,
but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.
9 I wrote to you in my epistle not to keep company with sexually immoral people.
10 Yet I certainly did not mean
with the sexually immoral people of this world,
or with the covetous, or extortioners, or idolaters,
since then
you would need to go out of the world.
11 But now I have written to you not to keep company
with anyone named a brother,
who is sexually immoral, or covetous, or an idolater, or a reviler,
or a drunkard, or an extortioner —
not even to eat with such a person.
12 For what have I to do with judging those also who are outside?
Do you not judge those who are inside?
13 But those who are outside God judges.
Therefore "put away from yourselves the evil person."
Hebrews 12:6-11
6 For whom the LORD loves He chastens,
And scourges every son whom He receives."
7 If you endure chastening, God deals with you as with sons;
for what son is there whom a father does not chasten?
8 But if you are without chastening, of which all have become partakers,
then you are illegitimate and not sons.
9 Furthermore, we have had human fathers who corrected us,
and we paid them respect.
Shall we not much more readily be in subjection to
the Father of spirits
and live?
10 For they indeed for a few days chastened us as seemed best to them,
but He for our profit, that we may be partakers of His holiness.
11 Now no chastening seems to be joyful for the present,
but painful;
nevertheless, afterward it yields the peaceable fruit of righteousness
to those who have been trained by it.
Matthew 18:15-17
 "Moreover if your brother sins against you,
go and tell him his fault between you and him alone.
If he hears you,
you have gained your brother.
16 But if he will not hear, take with you one or two more,
that 'by the mouth of two or three witnesses
every word may be established.'
17 And if he refuses to hear them,
tell it to the church.
But if he refuses even to hear the church,
let him be to you like a heathen
and a tax collector.
Is it wrong to name those who are teaching false doctrine or
those who embrace those who teach false doctrine?
Romans 16:17-18
 Now I urge you, brethren, note those who cause divisions and offenses,
contrary to the doctrine which you learned,
and avoid them.
Titus 1:13
13 ...Therefore rebuke them sharply,
that they may be sound in the faith,
2 Timothy 1:15
15 This you know, that all those in Asia have turned away from me, among whom are Phygellus and Hermogenes.
2 Timothy 2:16-18
16 But shun profane and idle babblings, for they will increase to more ungodliness.
17 And their message will spread like cancer.
Hymenaeus and Philetus are of this sort,
18 who have strayed concerning the truth, ...
2 Timothy 4:9-10
Be diligent to come to me quickly;
10 for Demas has forsaken me, having loved this present world,
and has departed for Thessalonica
2 Timothy 4:14-15
14 Alexander the coppersmith did me much harm.
May the Lord repay him according to his works.
15 You also must beware of him,
for he has greatly resisted our words.
