Good Friday Scriptures

Mark 14:32-42

Then they came to a place which was named Gethsemane;

and He said to His disciples,

"Sit here while I pray."

33 And He took Peter, James, and John with Him,

and He began to be troubled and deeply distressed.

34 Then He said to them,

"My soul is exceedingly sorrowful, even to death.

Stay here and watch."

35 He went a little farther and fell on the ground,

and prayed that if it were possible,

the hour might pass from Him.

36 And He said,

 "Abba, Father, all things are possible for You.

Take this cup away from Me;

nevertheless, not what I will,

but what You will."

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
37 Then He came and found them sleeping,
and said to Peter,
"Simon, are you sleeping?
Could you not watch one hour?
38 Watch and pray,
lest you enter into temptation.
The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak."
39 Again He went away and prayed,
and spoke the same words.
40 And when He returned,
He found them asleep again,
for their eyes were heavy;
and they did not know what to answer Him.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

41 Then He came the third time and said to them,

"Are you still sleeping and resting?

It is enough!

The hour has come;

behold, the Son of Man is being betrayed

into the hands of sinners.

42 Rise, let us be going.

See, My betrayer is at hand."

Mark 14:43-50

And immediately, while He was still speaking,

 Judas,

one of the twelve,

with a great multitude with swords and clubs,

came from the chief priests and the scribes and the elders.

44 Now His betrayer had given them a signal, saying,

"Whomever I kiss,

He is the One;

seize Him

and lead Him away safely."

45 As soon as he had come,

immediately he went up to Him

and said to Him,

 "Rabbi, Rabbi!"

and kissed Him.

46 Then they laid their hands on Him

and took Him.

47 And one of those who stood by

drew his sword

 and struck the servant of the high priest,

and cut off his ear.

48 Then Jesus answered and said to them,

"Have you come out, as against a robber,

with swords and clubs to take Me?

49 I was daily with you in the temple teaching,

and you did not seize Me.

But the Scriptures must be fulfilled."

50 Then they all forsook Him and fled.

John 18:1-11

When Jesus had spoken these words,

He went out with His disciples over the Brook Kidron,

where there was a garden,

which He and His disciples entered.

2 And Judas, who betrayed Him, also knew the place;

 for Jesus often met there with His disciples.

3 Then Judas, having received a detachment of troops,

and officers from the chief priests and Pharisees,

 came there with lanterns, torches, and weapons.

4 Jesus therefore,

knowing all things that would come upon Him,

went forward and said to them,

"Whom are you seeking?"

5 They answered Him,

"Jesus of Nazareth."

Jesus said to them, "I am He."

And Judas,

 who betrayed Him,

also stood with them.

6 Now when He said to them, "I am He,"

they drew back

and fell to the ground.

7 Then He asked them again,

"Whom are you seeking?"

 And they said,

"Jesus of Nazareth."

8 Jesus answered,

"I have told you that I am He.

 Therefore, if you seek Me, let these go their way,"

9 that the saying might be fulfilled which He spoke,

"Of those whom You gave Me

I have lost none."

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
10 Then Simon Peter, having a sword,
drew it
and struck the high priest's servant,
 and cut off his right ear.
The servant's name was Malchus.
11 So Jesus said to Peter,
"Put your sword into the sheath.
Shall I not drink the cup which My Father has given Me?"
NKJV
Matthew 26:52-56
52 But Jesus said to him, "Put your sword in its place,
for all who take the sword will perish by the sword.
53 Or do you think that I cannot now pray to My Father,
and He will provide Me with more than twelve legions of angels?
54 How then could the Scriptures be fulfilled,
that it must happen thus?"
55 In that hour Jesus said to the multitudes,
"Have you come out, as against a robber,
with swords and clubs to take Me?
I sat daily with you, teaching in the temple,
and you did not seize Me.
56 But all this was done
that the Scriptures of the prophets might be fulfilled."
Then all the disciples forsook Him and fled.
John 18:12-14
Then the detachment of troops
and the captain and the officers of the Jews
arrested Jesus and bound Him.
13 And they led Him away to Annas first,
for he was the father-in-law of Caiaphas
who was high priest that year.
14 Now it was Caiaphas who advised the Jews that
 it was expedient that one man
should die for the people.
Jesus before Annas
John 18:19-24
The high priest then asked Jesus
about His disciples and His doctrine.
20 Jesus answered him,
"I spoke openly to the world.
I always taught in synagogues and in the temple,
where the Jews always meet,
and in secret I have said nothing.
21 Why do you ask Me?
Ask those who have heard Me what I said to them.
 Indeed they know what I said."
22 And when He had said these things,
one of the officers who stood by struck Jesus
with the palm of his hand, saying,
"Do You answer the high priest like that?"
23 Jesus answered him,
"If I have spoken evil, bear witness of the evil;
 but if well, why do you strike Me?"
24 Then Annas sent Him bound to Caiaphas the high priest.
Peter's Denials
John 18:15-18
And Simon Peter followed Jesus,
and so did another disciple.
Now that disciple was known to the high priest,
and went with Jesus into the courtyard of the high priest.
16 But Peter stood at the door outside.
Then the other disciple, who was known to the high priest,
went out and spoke to her who kept the door,
and brought Peter in.
17 Then the servant girl who kept the door said to Peter,
"You are not also one of this Man's disciples, are you?"
He said, "I am not."
18 Now the servants and officers who had made a fire of coals
stood there, for it was cold,
and they warmed themselves.
And Peter stood with them and warmed himself.
NKJV
John 18:25-27
 Now Simon Peter stood and warmed himself.
Therefore they said to him,
"You are not also one of His disciples, are you?"
He denied it and said, "I am not!"
26 One of the servants of the high priest,
a relative of him whose ear Peter cut off, said,
"Did I not see you in the garden with Him?"
27 Peter then denied again;
and immediately a rooster crowed.
NKJV
Luke 22:61-62
61 And the Lord turned and looked at Peter.
Then Peter remembered the word of the Lord,
how He had said to him,
"Before the rooster crows, you will deny Me three times."
62 So Peter went out and wept bitterly.
NKJV
Luke 22:63-65
Now the men who held Jesus mocked Him and beat Him.
64 And having blindfolded Him, t
hey struck Him on the face
and asked Him, saying,
 "Prophesy! Who is the one who struck You?"
65 And many other things they blasphemously spoke against Him.
NKJV
Luke 22:66-71
As soon as it was day, the elders of the people,
both chief priests and scribes,
came together and led Him into their council, saying,
67 "If You are the Christ, tell us."
But He said to them,
"If I tell you, you will by no means believe.
68 And if I also ask you,
you will by no means answer Me or let Me go.
69 Hereafter the Son of Man
will sit on the right hand of the power of God."
70 Then they all said,
"Are You then the Son of God?"
So He said to them,
"You rightly say that I am."
71 And they said, "What further testimony do we need?
 For we have heard it ourselves from His own mouth."
NKJV
Judas
Matthew 27:3-10
Then Judas, His betrayer, seeing that He had been condemned,
was remorseful
and brought back the thirty pieces of silver
to the chief priests and elders,
4 saying, "I have sinned by betraying innocent blood."
And they said,
"What is that to us? You see to it!"
5 Then he threw down the pieces of silver in the temple
and departed, and went and hanged himself.
6 But the chief priests took the silver pieces and said,
"It is not lawful to put them into the treasury,
because they are the price of blood."
7 And they consulted together
and bought with them the potter's field,
to bury strangers in.
8 Therefore that field has been called the Field of Blood to this day.
9 Then was fulfilled what was spoken by Jeremiah the prophet, saying,
"And they took the thirty pieces of silver,
the value of Him who was priced,
whom they of the children of Israel priced,
10 and gave them for the potter's field,
as the LORD directed me."
Jesus before Pilate
John 18:28-38
Then they led Jesus from Caiaphas to the Praetorium,
and it was early morning.
But they themselves did not go into the Praetorium,
lest they should be defiled,
but that they might eat the Passover.
29 Pilate then went out to them and said,
"What accusation do you bring against this Man?"
30 They answered and said to him,
"If He were not an evildoer,
we would not have delivered Him up to you."
31 Then Pilate said to them,
"You take Him and judge Him according to your law."
Therefore the Jews said to him,
"It is not lawful for us to put anyone to death,"
32 that the saying of Jesus might be fulfilled
which He spoke,
signifying by what death He would die.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

33 Then Pilate entered the Praetorium again,

 called Jesus,

and said to Him,

"Are You the King of the Jews?"

34 Jesus answered him,

"Are you speaking for yourself about this,

or did others tell you this concerning Me?"

35 Pilate answered, "Am I a Jew?

Your own nation and the chief priests have delivered You to me. What have You done?"

36 Jesus answered,

"My kingdom is not of this world.

If My kingdom were of this world,

My servants would fight,

so that I should not be delivered to the Jews;

but now My kingdom is not from here."

37 Pilate therefore said to Him, "Are You a king then?"

Jesus answered,

"You say rightly that I am a king.

For this cause I was born,

and for this cause I have come into the world,

that I should bear witness to the truth.

Everyone who is of the truth hears My voice."

38 Pilate said to Him, "What is truth?"

And when he had said this,

he went out again to the Jews,

and said to them,

"I find no fault in Him at all.

NKJV

Luke 23:5-12

5 But they were the more fierce, saying,

"He stirs up the people, teaching throughout all Judea,

beginning from Galilee to this place."

6 When Pilate heard of Galilee,

he asked if the Man were a Galilean.

7 And as soon as he knew that He belonged to Herod's jurisdiction, he sent Him to Herod,

who was also in Jerusalem at that time.

Jesus before Herod

8 Now when Herod saw Jesus,

he was exceedingly glad;

for he had desired for a long time to see Him,

because he had heard many things about Him,

and he hoped to see some miracle done by Him.

9 Then he questioned Him with many words,

but He answered him nothing.

10 And the chief priests and scribes stood

and vehemently accused Him.

11 Then Herod, with his men of war,

treated Him with contempt and mocked Him,

arrayed Him in a gorgeous robe,

and sent Him back to Pilate.

12 That very day Pilate and Herod became friends with each other, for previously they had been at enmity with each other.

NKJV

Jesus before Pilate

Matthew 27:15-26

Now at the feast the governor

was accustomed to releasing to the multitude

one prisoner whom they wished.

16 And at that time they had a notorious prisoner

called Barabbas.

17 Therefore, when they had gathered together,

Pilate said to them,

"Whom do you want me to release to you?

Barabbas, or Jesus who is called Christ?"

18 For he knew that they had handed Him over

because of envy.

19 While he was sitting on the judgment seat,

his wife sent to him, saying,

"Have nothing to do with that just Man,

for I have suffered many things today in a dream

because of Him."

20 But the chief priests and elders persuaded the multitudes

that they should ask for Barabbas

and destroy Jesus.

21 The governor answered and said to them,

"Which of the two do you want me to release to you?"

They said,"Barabbas!"

22 Pilate said to them,

"What then shall I do with Jesus

 who is called Christ?"

They all said to him, "Let Him be crucified!"

23 Then the governor said,

"Why, what evil has He done?"

But they cried out all the more, saying,

"Let Him be crucified!"

John 19:4-16

4 Pilate then went out again,

and said to them,

"Behold, I am bringing Him out to you,

that you may know that I find no fault in Him."

5 Then Jesus came out, wearing the crown of thorns

and the purple robe.

And Pilate said to them, "Behold the Man!"

6 Therefore, when the chief priests and officers saw Him,

they cried out, saying,

 "Crucify Him, crucify Him!"

Pilate said to them, "You take Him and crucify Him,

for I find no fault in Him."

7 The Jews answered him,

"We have a law,

and according to our law He ought to die,

 because He made Himself the Son of God."

8 Therefore, when Pilate heard that saying,

 he was the more afraid,

9 and went again into the Praetorium,

and said to Jesus,

"Where are You from?"

But Jesus gave him no answer.

10 Then Pilate said to Him,

"Are You not speaking to me?

Do You not know that I have power to crucify You,

 and power to release You?"

11 Jesus answered,

"You could have no power at all against Me

unless it had been given you from above.

Therefore the one who delivered Me to you

 has the greater sin."

12 From then on Pilate sought to release Him,

but the Jews cried out, saying,

"If you let this Man go,

you are not Caesar's friend.

Whoever makes himself a king speaks against Caesar."

13 When Pilate therefore heard that saying,

he brought Jesus out and sat down in the judgment seat

in a place that is called The Pavement,

but in Hebrew, Gabbatha.

14 Now it was the Preparation Day of the Passover,

and about the sixth hour.

And he said to the Jews, "Behold your King!"

15 But they cried out,

"Away with Him, away with Him!

Crucify Him!"

Pilate said to them, "Shall I crucify your King?"

The chief priests answered,

"We have no king but Caesar!"

NKJV

Matthew 27:24-26

24 When Pilate saw that he could not prevail at all,

but rather that a tumult was rising,

he took water and washed his hands before the multitude,

saying,

"I am innocent of the blood of this just Person.

You see to it."

25 And all the people answered and said,

"His blood be on us and on our children."

26 Then he released Barabbas to them;

and when he had scourged Jesus,

he delivered Him to be crucified.

NKJV

Matthew 27:27-31

 Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the Praetorium

 and gathered the whole garrison around Him.

28 And they stripped Him and put a scarlet robe on Him.

29 When they had twisted a crown of thorns,

they put it on His head,

and a reed in His right hand.

And they bowed the knee before Him and mocked Him,

saying,

"Hail, King of the Jews!"

30 Then they spat on Him,

and took the reed and struck Him on the head.

31 And when they had mocked Him,

they took the robe off Him, put His own clothes on Him,

and led Him away to be crucified.

NKJV

Luke 23:26-31

 Now as they led Him away, they laid hold of a certain man,

 Simon a Cyrenian,

who was coming from the country,

and on him they laid the cross

that he might bear it after Jesus.

27 And a great multitude of the people followed Him,

and women who also mourned and lamented Him.

28 But Jesus, turning to them, said,

"Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for Me,

but weep for yourselves and for your children.

29 For indeed the days are coming in which they will say,

'Blessed are the barren, wombs that never bore,

and breasts which never nursed!'

30 Then they will begin 'to say to the mountains,

 "Fall on us!" and to the hills, "Cover us!"'

31 For if they do these things in the green wood,

what will be done in the dry?"

NKJV

John 19:17-22

And He, bearing His cross, went out to a place called

the Place of a Skull,

which is called in Hebrew, Golgotha,

18 where they crucified Him,

and two others with Him,

one on either side, and Jesus in the center.

19 Now Pilate wrote a title and put it on the cross.

And the writing was:

JESUS OF NAZARETH, THE KING OF THE JEWS.

20 Then many of the Jews read this title,

for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city;

and it was written in Hebrew, Greek, and Latin.

21 Therefore the chief priests of the Jews said to Pilate,

"Do not write, 'The King of the Jews,'

but, 'He said,

"I am the King of the Jews."'"

22 Pilate answered, "What I have written, I have written."

NKJV

Luke 23:33-43

33 And when they had come to the place called Calvary,

there they crucified Him,

and the criminals, one on the right hand

and the other on the left.

34 Then Jesus said,

"Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they do. "

And they divided His garments and cast lots.

35 And the people stood looking on.

But even the rulers with them sneered, saying,

"He saved others; let Him save Himself

 if He is the Christ, the chosen of God."

36 The soldiers also mocked Him,

coming and offering Him sour wine,

37 and saying,

"If You are the King of the Jews, save Yourself."

Matthew 27:39-44

39 And those who passed by blasphemed Him, wagging their heads

40 and saying,

"You who destroy the temple and build it in three days,

save Yourself!

If You are the Son of God, come down from the cross."

41 Likewise the chief priests also,

mocking with the scribes and elders, said,

42 "He saved others; Himself He cannot save.

If He is the King of Israel,

let Him now come down from the cross,

and we will believe Him.

43 He trusted in God; let Him deliver Him now if He will have Him; for He said, 'I am the Son of God.'"

44 Even the robbers who were crucified with Him

reviled Him with the same thing.

NKJV

39 Then one of the criminals who were hanged

blasphemed Him, saying,

"If You are the Christ, save Yourself and us."

40 But the other, answering, rebuked him, saying,

"Do you not even fear God,

 seeing you are under the same condemnation?

41 And we indeed justly,

for we receive the due reward of our deeds;

but this Man has done nothing wrong."

42 Then he said to Jesus,

 "Lord, remember me when You come into Your kingdom."

43 And Jesus said to him,

"Assuredly, I say to you,

today you will be with Me in Paradise."

NKJV

John 19:23-27

23 Then the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus,

took His garments and made four parts,

 to each soldier a part,

and also the tunic.

Now the tunic was without seam,

woven from the top in one piece.

24 They said therefore among themselves,

"Let us not tear it, but cast lots for it, whose it shall be,"

that the Scripture might be fulfilled which says:

"They divided My garments among them,

And for My clothing they cast lots."

Therefore the soldiers did these things.

25 Now there stood by the cross of Jesus

His mother,

and His mother's sister, Mary the wife of Clopas,

 and Mary Magdalene.

26 When Jesus therefore saw His mother,

and the disciple whom He loved

standing by,

He said to His mother,

"Woman, behold your son!"

27 Then He said to the disciple,

"Behold your mother!"

And from that hour that disciple took her to his own home.

Matthew 27:45-49

Now from the sixth hour until the ninth hour

there was darkness over all the land.

46 And about the ninth hour

Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying,

"Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?"

that is,

"My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?"

47 Some of those who stood there,

when they heard that, said,

"This Man is calling for Elijah!"

48 Immediately one of them ran and took a sponge,

 filled it with sour wine and put it on a reed,

and offered it to Him to drink.

49 The rest said,

"Let Him alone; let us see if Elijah will come to save Him."

John 19:28-30

After this, Jesus,

knowing that all things were now accomplished,

that the Scripture might be fulfilled,

29 Now a vessel full of sour wine was sitting there;

 and they filled a sponge with sour wine,

put it on hyssop,

and put it to His mouth.

30 So when Jesus had received the sour wine,

John 19:31-37

Therefore, because it was the Preparation Day,

that the bodies should not remain on the cross

 on the Sabbath

(for that Sabbath was a high day),

the Jews asked Pilate that their legs might be broken,

 and that they might be taken away.

32 Then the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first

and of the other who was crucified with Him.

33 But when they came to Jesus

and saw that He was already dead,

they did not break His legs.

34 But one of the soldiers pierced His side with a spear,

 and immediately

blood and water came out.

35 And he who has seen has testified,

and his testimony is true;

and he knows that he is telling the truth,

so that you may believe.

36 For these things were done

that the Scripture should be fulfilled,

"Not one of His bones shall be broken."

37 And again another Scripture says,

"They shall look on Him whom they pierced."

Matthew 27:51-56

51 Then, behold,

the veil of the temple was torn in two

from top to bottom;

and the earth quaked,

and the rocks were split,

52 and the graves were opened;

and many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep

were raised;

53 and coming out of the graves

after His resurrection,

 they went into the holy city

and appeared to many.

54 So when the centurion and those with him,

who were guarding Jesus,

saw the earthquake

and the things that had happened,

they feared greatly,

saying,

"Truly this was the Son of God!"

55 And many women who followed Jesus from Galilee,

ministering to Him,

were there looking on from afar,

56 among whom were Mary Magdalene,

Mary the mother of James and Joses,

and

the mother of Zebedee's sons.

John 19:38-42

 After this, Joseph of Arimathea,

being a disciple of Jesus,

but secretly,

for fear of the Jews,

asked Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus;

and Pilate gave him permission.

So he came and took the body of Jesus.

39 And Nicodemus,

who at first came to Jesus by night,

also came,

bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes,

about a hundred pounds.

40 Then they took the body of Jesus,

and bound it in strips of linen

 with the spices,

as the custom of the Jews is to bury.

Mark 15:43-46

43 Joseph of Arimathea,

a prominent council member,

who was himself waiting for the kingdom of God,

coming and taking courage,

 went in to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus.

44 Pilate marveled that He was already dead;

and summoning the centurion,

he asked him

if He had been dead for some time.

45 So when he found out from the centurion,

he granted the body to Joseph.

46 Then he bought fine linen,

 took Him down,

and wrapped Him in the linen.

And he laid Him in a tomb which had been hewn out of the rock,

and

rolled a stone against the door of the tomb.
